Little Ler
Great Ler or Bakhtiaris

The small Ler group and tribes live in the west of the Zagros mountain range. The noteworthy point is that the Lors are not limited to the Lorestan region; For example, 3 important cities of Larneshin named Malair, Tuysarkan and Nahavand are located in Hamadan province.

The name of the land of Lorestan before Islam was “Pahleh” and Pahleh included a large part of the ancient Iran, which was called “Zagors” by the Greeks before that. Zagros was a land that included Medes and Pahle, and the appearance of the word Zagros was inspired by the word Zagreti Madi. After the conquest of Iran by the Arabs, the name of Pahle was changed to Jabal or Jabal, and today’s Lorestan was considered one of the states of Jabal (Mountain).

In general, the theories related to the naming of lers can be divided into 3 categories:

1- Some consider Lors to be the descendants of a person named Lor.

2- Some others consider the word Ler to be derived from Iranian names such as Lahrasb and others.

3- The third theory believes that the word Ler belongs to a specific place, which is divided into 3 parts:

Ler was a locality in “Manroud” or “Mayroud” province, which was the original seat of the Ler clan.
The word Lor is an abbreviation of Ellor, which is also the name of a city in the northwest of Dezful.
Some others have interpreted the word Ler as distorted from the word Lir and Yalir as meaning mountains covered with forest.
It is difficult to say which of the theories is correct; But these 3 theories have been presented based on the research done by different experts.
Some geographers, such as “Ibn Balkhi”, “Hamadullah Mostofi” and “Minorski”, consider the Lors to be Kurds. with the difference that the Lors follow the Shiite religion more than the Kurds and some of them are Ahl al-Haq.

On the other hand, some researchers believe that Lers are more or less mixed with other races such as Turks and Sami. N. Lambton, professor of Iranology, is against the previous opinion and rejects it and says:

Since one of the meanings of the word “Kurd” is desert wanderer and nomad, therefore the historians and geographers of the first centuries of the Islamic period gave the general title “Akarda” to all groups and categories of desert dwellers and desert dwellers, and it is not meant that Leran is a branch of be Kurds But the probability of Lori being related to Kurds is much higher than other races, because not only the language of Lori is similar to Kurdish language, but in terms of appearance, Lori have most of the common racial characteristics with Kurds.

Some historians and researchers also believe that the Lors are among the purest Iranian peoples.
